Multigenerational living: pros and cons
For some families, multiple generations living under one roof works well, but a lot of us have to consider many factors before deciding whether it’s best to share a home with our aging parents.
The upside is being able to provide the best care possible, the possibility of growing closer emotionally, and lower costs with a single household. The downside is a lack of time for yourself, the stress of caregiving, and possibly watching a loved one’s health worsen.
Weigh the pros and cons and decide what’s best for you and your senior relative(s) – and your kids, if they’re at home. Ask yourself a few questions about what living arrangement is best financially, what resources and caregiving support you need, whose house you’ll live in (yours or theirs), what your kids think of it all, how your siblings will get involved, and how you’re going to find time for yourself. Most important, keep the lines of communication open and be aware of resources that can help.
